MRS. MARY WATERMAN, was born on a farm near Elkport, Clayton County, Iowa, on August 16th, 1875. Her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Boehm, were natives of Germany, and were the parents of four children. Mary was the youngest of this group.
MARY BOEHM, attended the rural schools. and grew to womanhood in the Elkport community. After her confirmation, she became a member of the German Lutheran Church at Elkport. Later when they moved to Klemme. they became members of the Reformed church.
On May 27th, 1896, Mary Boehm, 21, and John W. Waterman, 27, were married at the parental Boehm farm home. They commenced housekeeping on a farm near Elkport, Iowa. Here their daughter, Mabel, was born, they then moved to a farm in Benton County, Iowa, where their son, Clarence, was born (1897).
In 1902, the Waterman family moved to Klemme, Iowa and shortly thereafter, bought a General Store and the building from Chris Lau, which they operated for 11 years. Mrs. Mary Waterman often helped in the store during rush hours. The public liked the Waterman Store and they enjoyed a brisk trade.
The Watermans sold out to John N. Day, and in 1914 built the double brick store now occupied by the Kluckhohn Brothers. They also built the brick store now occupied by Josten Hardware and Appliance.
The Waterman family continued to live in Klemme for another nine years, while John W. Waterman was our Postmaster.
In April, 1924, the Watermans moved to Clarion, Iowa, and operated a 'Cash Store.' After a few months, Mr. Waterman's health failed, they sold out and moved to Belmond, Iowa, where John Waterman died in October of that same year.
Mrs. Mary Waterman then moved to Klemme, and after several years, discontinued housekeeping, and has since made her home with her daughter, Mabel.
She had lived in Klemme for a total of nearly 30 years, was a kind mother and homemaker, and had many friends in this community.
Mrs. Mary Waterman died in Evanston, Illinois, December 26, 1957, the cause of her passing was a stroke. Her age, 82 years, 4 months and 10 days.
She leaves to mourn her passing:
a daughter, Mabel, Mrs. Alex Hoffgren, Evanston, Illinois;
a son, Clarence Waterman, Klemme, Iowa;
A grand daughter, Marian, Mrs. Lyle Wilcox, Council Bluffs, Iowa;
a sister, Mrs Fred Musfeld, Clarion, Iowa:
a brother. Fred Boehm, Elkport, Iowa.
One sister preceded her in death: Mrs. August C. Lau, Klemme, Iowa.CASKET BEARERS
