Obituary

JOHN JOSTEN, age 85, a lifetime resident of the Klemme Community, died at a Council Bluffs
Hospital, Monday, March 17th, 1958, following a two year illness.

He was born in the village of Himmershoi, Schlesvig-Holstein, Germany, on August 29, 1872,
the sixth of a family of seven children.

His father, Valentine Josten, operated a cabinet shop, where furniture was built for the
village people. The maiden name of his mother was Anna Nissen. In May 1875, when John was
two years old, the family moved to America. They traveled by boat down the Elbe river to
the ocean, and from there by steamship for 13 days to Castle Garden, New York. They
continued by rail to Garner, Hancock County, Iowa. They purchased a farm in Ell Township,
and moved out as soon as a temporary home could be built.

John Josten completed his common school education in a rural school nearby. He then attended
the Worden-Pollok Academy at Garner where he acquired a working knowledge of six languages.

His parents were members of the Elltown Reformed Church. here he attended Sunday School, and
completed his studies in the Heidelberger Katechimus, under the Reverend Henry Treich.

During the first building boom in the village of Klemme, beginning in 1890, many business
places were erected, and among these was the photographic studio of John Josten (1893). And
the Dressmaking and Millinery Shop of Elizabeth Renzehausen (1892).

Several years later, in 1901, John and Elizabeth were married. They became the parents of
one child, Earl E. Josten.

In 1894, the Town of Klemme was incorporated. 84 voters turned out at the town's first
election and chose Henry Terhufen as the first Mayor of Klemme.

John Josten voted at this election, and now with his passing, all of these 84 voters are
dead and gone, most of them lie at rest in the Klemme Cemetery.

Among other things, John Josten was distinctly a 'Churchman,' as a boy he memorized hundreds
of chapters from the Bible, and for many years was a church leader in his home town.

He died Monday morning, March 17, 1958. his age, 85 years, 6 months and 17 days.

He leaves to mourn his passing: his son, Rev Earl E Josten, Missouri Valley, Iowa; Two
grandchildren, Robert and Ann Josten; also one brother, Henry A Josten, Klemme, Iowa.

The following preceded him in death: His one sister, Christina, Mrs August Haberkamp; his
four brothers, Hans, Valentine, Peter and Erich.
