A live-time resident of Hancock County, died Monday, September 19, 1960 at the Belmond Hospital, after a lingering illness. Her age 71 years, 8 months and 2 days.
Etna Suckow Paul was born January 17, 1889 on a farm in Liberty Township, the first born of seven children.
Her parents were German people, her father Henry L Suckow was born in Albany, New York. Her mother, Taldine M Brouwer was born in Germany.
She was baptized in the Liberty German Methodist Church by the Reverend Henry Kaste.
She completed her common school education, through the 8th grade at District #8. Liberty Township had only two rural schools at that time, and the attendance was large in each. She was privileged to have had among her instructors Sarah Koerner and George Schapler both outstanding teachers.
Etna Suckow wanted to become a school teacher and took special training at Morningside College, but when she arrived home, there was another job waiting for her. Our local doctor needed a nurse to care for a very sick patient. She volunteered and has been a nurse, off and on throughout the years. She was a kind, intelligent, dignified and healthy young woman and enjoyed being a nurse.
On Thanksgiving Day 1915 (November 25), Etna Suckow and Herman Paul were married by the Reverend Witter at the home of the brides parents.
They were a most congenial couple, and became the proud parents of three children: Vella Mae, Emily and Milton.
The commenced housekeeping on a farm, then moved to Klemme, where Mr Paul operated a Service Station. Their next move was to the Hancock County Home at Duncan where they served as Superintendant and Matron of the home. Five years ago they built a home in Klemme and retired because of the failing health of Mrs Paul.
