Wed., November 17, 1954Kanawha-Susan B. Shurson was born July 4, 1863 near Lisbon, Ill., the daughter of Nels and Margaret Michelson. She was baptized by the Lutheran pastor, Rev. P. Rasmussen. The same year the family moved to Polk county, Iowa, where they made their home on a farm on the prairie. There they helped build the Fjeldburg Lutheran Church in the Huxley area in which church Susan was confirmed by the pioneer pastor, Rev. Wiese.
In 1892 she moved with her parents to Hancock county and settled on a farm three miles northwest of what is today Kanawha. In 1899, when Kanawha was platted, the family moved to the new town.
In 1901, Susan was married to John S. Shurson by the Rev. H.S. Holm. They made their home in Kanawha. Mr. Shurson died in 1848.
Mrs. Shurson was a charter member of the Kanawha Lutheran Church, helped organize the Ladies' Aid Society, and for many years served as it's president. She also taught Sunday school.
Surviving are two sisters, Bessie (Mrs. Theodore Tegland) and Anna (Mrs. Elling Soma), Belmond; besides other relatives and a host of friends. Five brothers preceded her in death.
Funeral services were held at the Kanawha Lutheran Church Friday afternoon, and burial was made in the Kanawah Cemetery.
