Forest City Summit, Forest City, Iowa dated Thursday, September 17, 1903
Mrs. Matilda Durant died September 10, 1903, aged 77 years, 2 months, and 17 days. Matilda Benjamin was born at Three Rivers, near Quebec, Canada, June 23, 1826, and was married to John Durant April 26, 1847. Soon after her marriage she moved with her husband to the United States, settling first at Philadelphia, PA, and from that place they moved to Okee, Columbia County, WI, and from there to Hancock County, Iowa, where the larger period of married life was spent. Mrs. Durant was the mother of ten children, eight of whom survive her, and were present at the funeral except one daughter. Eight years ago her husband was called home and she for many years a professing Christian, "put her house in order," getting ready to inhabit the mansion prepared for her by Him whom she loved and served, and we doubt not a large circle of those who had known and loved her here were there to bid her welcome to the everlasting home. The funeral services were conducted last Sunday forenoon by Rev. J. D. Mason at the Durant School House and the remains laid to rest in Madison Township Cemetery, Hancock County, Iowa.
