Hancock County Pioneer Was Buried Here Friday

Obituary for Mr. Jacob Philip Blumer

Was An Old Pioneer Resident Of Hancock County

Jacob Philip Blumer, whose death was reported in the last issue of this paper, was born August 1, 1836, at Knittlingin, Wurtemberg, Germany. The deceased spent his young manhood in the place of his birth, where he was educated and by his confirmation was received into the full membership on the Evangelical Protestant Church.
On May 15, 1860, Mr. Blumer was joined in marriage to Miss Christina Meidermeier. The union was blessed with 10 children; 5 of whom died in infancy and one, Jacob, who died in the prime of his life in 1904. In March 1883, Mr. Blumer came with his family to America making their home on a farm near Garner, Iowa. Here on the prairie, Mr. Blumer struggled under many difficulties, because in those days Hancock County was not what it is today; however, Mr. Blumer with his honesty and unceasing toil did his share in the development of this country. The Lord blessed the work of his hands so that he could become the owner of a farm, on which he lived until 1902, when he moved to Klemme, there to spend his declining years.
Mr. Blumer was a kind and peaceful man and had many friends who will not only miss him in the future but who have missed him already because of his long illness. As a husband and father he was an example for many. When he came to Garner he and his family joined the Ell Township Reformed Church where Mr. Blumer was a member until he came to Klemme in 1902, and since that time, until the time of his death, been a faithful member of the Klemme Reformed Church.
Father Blumer was very fond of reading and this was his passtime during the last years of his life,
After an illness of several months death came peacefully on September 19th, at 11:00 P.M. His long and useful life was brought to a close by the weight of years. His age was 86 years, one month, and nineteen days.
He leaves to mourn his death; four children, one son and three daughters, fifteen grandchildren and eighteen great-grandchildren and many relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held Friday afternoon, September 22nd, at the Reformed Church and was largely attended, The remains were then taken to the Ell Town Church cemetery. Rev. A.A. Depping
