August 1, 2001Gladys Young, 97, of Stratford, died Monday, July 30, 2001 at the Stratford Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. Funeral services were held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at the First Baptist Church in Stratford, with the Rev. David Fernland officiating. Burial was in the Oakwood Cemetery, north of Stratford. Arrangements were made with the Foster Funeral Home of Webster City.
Gladys Lucille Carlson was born August 10, 1903 to F. August and Jennie B. Peterson Carlson on the family farm, southeast of Stratford in Marion Township. She received her education at the East Marion rural school. In 1925, she moved with her parents to Stratford.
On February 25, 1928, she married Floyd A. Young at her parents' home. They farmed northeast of Stratford in Webster Township, retiring in 1970, but staying on the family farm. Mr. Young died May 7, 1983. She had resided at the Stratford Nursing and Rehabilitation Center since April of this year.
She is survived by daughter, Genevieve Ferrari; son and daughter-in-law, Darrell and Lorraine Young; son-in-law Robert Conklin, all of Stratford; twelve grandchildren, their families and numerous relatives and friends.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents; daughter, Geraldine Conklin; son-in-law, Robert Ferrari; brothers, Glenn, Lester, Roy and Robert Carlson; sisters, Ethel Town and Ruth Angstrom.
Mrs. Young was a homemaker and provided baking and decorated cakes for weddings, graduations and other special occasions for her community for 25 years. She was a member of the First Baptist Church where she was active in Ladies Aid and was chairman of the social committee for several years. She had served as president for the P.T.A. and Band Boosters, when her children were in school. She had always helped, when needed, with both her community and her family.
Memorials may be given to the First Baptist Church of Stratford.
