Stratford Courier, Stratford, Iowa
November 27, 1913Martha Caroline, daughter of John R. and Alvina [Milburn] Payne, was born in Green county, Tennessee, January 17, 1847. After an illness of ten weeks she departed this life November 21, 1913, aged 66 years, 10 months and 4 days.
When she was five years of age her parents came to Webster county, Iowa, and settled on a farm northeast of Dayton, where she grew to womanhood. On the 13th of October, 1864, she was married to Joseph M. Holt, and continued to reside in the same neighborhood until they moved to Stratford in 1894. Of their children, two daughters and three sons have preceded her to the great beyond. The three remaining sons, Virgil, Clyde and Ford, and three daughters, Mrs. Miles Allen of Burnside, Misses Effie and Vesta, are here and were at her bedside when she died. It was her wish that her children should care for her when sick and this they have faithfully done. Mrs. Holt was wholly devoted to her family, for them she cared and planned and toiled. She was always at home. It seems very appropriate therefore that they should show some devotion to so devoted a mother. She was converted and joined the Methodist Episcopal church at Stratford in 1895, being received into full connection September 22, 1895.
Besides her children she leaves six grandchildren, two sisters, and a host of friends and relatives to mourn her departure. Funeral services were held from the M.E. church Tuesday, November 25th, at 2 p.m. and the remains were interred in the Oakwood cemetery. Rev. H. Albertson, pastor of the church, conducted the services.[
