Mary Downs, 90, Webster City, died Sunday, May 31, 1998 at Crestview Manor Care Center. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the Foster Funeral Home, with Rev. Mike Morgan officiating. Burial will be in Graceland Cemetery. Visitation will be at the funeral home from 5 to 9 p.m. Wednesday and prior to the service on Thursday.

Mary Elizabeth Berogan was born Dec. 17, 1907 on a farm north of Stonega [daughter of George Daniel & Elgie Marie Perry Berogan]. She attended rural schools and graduated from Webster City High School in 1925. She graduated from Webster City Junior College in 1928. On Sept. 11, 1930 she married Robert Elston Downs at Webster City. The couple had resided in Ames, Emmetsburg, Cherokee, Humboldt and Correctionville. In 1943, they moved to the family farm north of Highview. Mr. Downs died in Oct. of 1966. In 1984, she moved to Webster City.

She is survived by sons and daughters-in-law, Jerry and Nadine Downs, Aiken, S.C., Joe and Judy Downs, Edmond, Okla., Jon and Sylvia Downs, Concord, Calif., James and Donna Downs, Webster City and Jeff and Delta Downs, Ringle, Wis.; eight grandchildren, four great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, John Berogan; and sisters, Fern Seiser and Opal Wurdinger.

Mrs. Downs was a member of the St. Paul's Universalist Church and currently attended Asbury United Methodist Church. She was a member of the Webster City Senior Citizens Club, Hamilton Heritage Hunters, Quilt Patch Club, Hamilton Hospital Auxiliary, R.S.V.P., Hamilton County Historical Society and the Hamilton County Farm Bureau.
