Funeral services for Earl S. Bates, 79, will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday at the Foster Funeral home with the Rev. George Eddy officiating. Burial will be in the Cass Center northeast of Webster City.

Mr. Bates died Wednesday morning at the Hamilton County hospital where he had been a patient the past two weeks.

Earl Sidney Bates, son of Benjamin and Sarah Bates, was born Jan. 22, 1887 at Yankton, S.D. He was reared and educated in that community.

He was united in marriage June 30, 1915 to Minnie Stoppelmoor, at Highmore, S.D. The couple made their home in that community where Mr. Bates was employed by the telephone company.

In 1921, the family moved to Iowa, making their home on a farm eight miles southeast of Webster City. In 1928, the family moved into Webster City, where Mr. Bates was employed for many years at McCollough's Inc. He later was employed at the former Ernest Ford Garage and before his retirement in 1952, was employed at the former Earl May store in this city.

Mr. Bates is survived by his wife; four daughters and one son: Mrs. Guy (Jennie) Fisher, Webster City, Mrs. Myrtle Heinkel, Montevista, Calif., Mrs. Kenneth (Irene) Claude, Saratoga, Calif., Mrs. Leonard (Edna) Jones, Fort Dodge, Walter L. Bates, Indiatlantic Beach, Fla. Also surviving are 22 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; one brother, Allen Bates of Klamath Falls, Ore., and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, seven sisters and three grandchildren, who died in infancy.

Mr. Bates was a member of the First Baptist church. He was also a member of the Odd Fellow Lodge, the Encampment and Cantonment, the Rebekah Lodge and Encampment Auxiliary.
