Dale Engelby, age 78, of Jewell died at his home Saturday, February 12, 2005. Funeral services are 2:00 p.m. Thursday, February 17, 2005 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Ellsworth with military rites by the Story City American Legion Post. Friends may call Wednesday from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Becker Funeral Home in Jewell.

Dale Sydney Engelby was born May 3, 1926 near Stanhope to Joe and Hope (Cottington) Engelby. He grew up in the Stanhope area, graduating from Stanhope High School in 1944. He served in the U.S. Army during World War Two in the European Theatre and participated in the Battle of the Bulge. Following the war, Dale returned to the Stanhope area and farmed. He also had been a truck driver for Hove Truck Line and worked for the Chicago Northwestern Railroad. Dale operated the Longhorn Lounge in Jewell. Following retirement, he summered in Jewell enjoying his grandchildren and wintered in Arizona. Dale was a member of the American Legion Lafayette Post in Story City.

Dale is survived by his sons, Terry Engelby and Jeff Engelby, both of Jewell, and Bradley Engelby of Ames, grandchildren, Cassidy, Curtis, Chris and Cayla, two brothers, Duane Engelby of Stanhope and Rick Engelby of Phoenix, Arizona, and two sisters, Doris Rohling of Phoenix, Arizona and Mary Jo Johnson of Stratford. His parents preceded him in death.
