Arlene Oakland, 79, died Friday, Feb. 11, at Mary Greeley Medical Center in Ames.

Funeral services were this morning at Bethesda Lutheran Church in Jewell. Burial was in Evergreen Cemetery in Jewell.

Arlene Mae Olson was born Aug. 5, 1925, in Jewell, to Henry B. and Tillie (Denekas) Olson. She grew up in Jewell. Following her graduation from Jewell High School, she attended and graduated from Waldorf College in Forest City. She married Richard Selmer Oakland March 11, 1950, at Presbyterian Church in Kamrar. She worked at Iowa State University, retiring from Parks Library in 1986. She had resided at Bethany Manor in Story City since May 2003. She was a member of Bethesda Lutheran Church. She enjoyed crochet, crafting and puzzles, and loved to follow her grandson's activities.

She is survived by her sons, Steven Oakland of Ames and Brian (Janelle) Oakland of Jewell; one daughter, Pam Oakland of Ames; two grandsons, Joshua and Matthew; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband in 1996; and two sisters, Lois Murphy and Ruth Erickson.

Becker Funeral Home in Jewell was in charge of arrangements.
