Clara Woodard Brain was born December 31, 1929, in Hamilton County, one mile north of Homer, Iowa. She attended the rural school in Homer through 8th grade and then high school in Webster City, graduating in 1949. She then went to Iowa State College in Ames, graduating in 1953 with a degree in dietetics. She lived in San Francisco for two years as she completed a dietetic internship and worked at the University of California Hospital. She returned to Iowa and was a dietician at the University of Iowa Hospital in Iowa City for another 4 years. She married Henry Albert Brain on December 9, 1960. The couple moved to Clara’s parents’ farm and lived and farmed there until retirement in about 2000. They planned and built a house at the farm in 1976, and she enjoyed living there as they took care of family and farm. They have three children, Mark, Paul, and Ruth. They enjoyed travel across the U.S., as well as to places like South Africa and Europe. In 2006 they moved to Fort Dodge, Iowa. Clara’s parents were Lester and Ethel Woodard. Clara had a brother and sister, Floyd and Helen, who preceded her in death. Clara died February 7, 2023.

A Celebration of Life will be 1:30 p.m. on Friday February 10. 2023 at the First United Methodist Church in Fort Dodge. Visitation will be from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Thursday at the Gunderson Funeral Home & Cremation Services in Fort Dodge.
