Dorothea M. Scott passed away September 7, 2022, after 93 years on this earth to meet her Lord and Savior. She died of natural causes at her home in Boone, IA, with her family at her side.

A Funeral Mass will be held Tuesday, September 13, 2022, at 10:00 A.M. at the Church of the Sacred Heart with Rev. Timothy Johnson officiating. Dorothea will be laid to rest in Calvary Cemetery, in Webster City, IA near her parents and two sons.

Dorothea Mary Smith was born December 2, 1928, in Weaver Township near Gilmore City, IA, to Clifford and Mary Wolfe Smith, the youngest of three children. She lived her entire life in Iowa except for one year in Texas. She was a gifted artist beginning her career at a very young age drawing on closet walls, the margins in her mother’s cookbooks, wherever she could find a blank spot. She grew up in the Great Depression with no money for plain paper. By the time she was 12 she was drawing likenesses of her classmates that actually looked like them. Years later she did pencil and charcoal drawing commissions that were absolutely beautiful and also brought in extra money. Many were displayed throughout the Boone community in banks and even establishments throughout the city of Ames.

She was known for many things. She was always excited about Mass, saving a place for her kids next to her in the pew. She was known for her love of cappuccino, helping others with their grammar, recycling whatever she could, even stopping on highways to pick up a can to save her grandchildren’s environment for their future. Her quick wit made so many others laugh, even the nurses and caretakers up to her final days in their care. Her infectious smile lit up any room and the socialite in her became friends with any stranger. She was the epitome of fun and talked to everyone and anyone. She kept her memories with a camera in her hands much to the chagrin of her children although later we all appreciated it. She was known for rescuing dilapidated furniture on the curb and restoring them to usefulness and to also drive with two wheels on the road and two wheels on the shoulder to avoid oncoming traffic. She earned a certificate in outdoor cooking even though we never went camping. She was also known for dropping everything to help with her kids and grandchildren, never ever had a bad word about anyone. She had a few opinions worth noting: Taylor Kinney, the best looking man on the planet; Toby Keith, the best Country Western singer; Lawrence Welk, the best big band; and Bobby Burgess, the best dancer. She was able to see Toby in person with VIP concert backstage passes and he gave her a huge hug while she held a banner that read ‘I want to be Toby’s girl’ and Bobby called her personally on her birthday, then sent her a Christmas card.

As children we all sat in front of the TV every Saturday night to watch Lawrence Welk (with chili and cornbread), her favorite program. Dancing was in her blood and kept her young. She finished this life listening to Toby and Lawrence, her toes still dancing to the music.

When she was 18 years old she took flying lessons to be a pilot. She also attended Mercy Nursing School for a time before she married Clarence Scott in 1948. Fifteen children were born to this union. Later they divorced. In 1973 she married Dr. Daryl Bottorff and she moved to Sac City. Like a woman she changed her mind about the marriage and moved to Boone, IA, where she finished raising her children. This single mom did a wonderful job. She was so very proud of all her children and their accomplishments.

Dorothea is survived by seven sons: John (Valerie) Scott, Fredrick, CO; Robert (Sherry) Scott, Austin, TX; Dr. David Scott, Shawano, WI; Andrew Scott, Boone, IA; Tim (Ana) Scott, Chicago, IL; Dan (Guille) Scott, Pasadena, TX; Joel (Sue) Scott, Ankeny, IA; six daughters: Susan Powell, Killeen, TX; Teresa (Craig) Davis, Magnolia, TX; Toni Scott, Lebanon, IN; Mary Beth (Jeff) Scott, Boone, IA; Jody Haws, Ankeny, IA; Rebecca (Lilly) Scott, Boone, IA; 23 grandchildren, 39 great-grandchildren and one great-great grandchild on the way. Rebecca and Lilly gave Dorothea wonderful care the last years of her life with help from other children, so she was able to remain in her home.

She was preceded in death by her parents, brothers, Cletus Smith and Eugene Smith, sons Chris Scott, Teddy Scott, husbands Clarence Scott and Daryl Bottorff, grandchildren Jason Dillingham, Brandy Dillingham, great-grandchildren Kara Dillingham and Emma Ivanovsky.

Dorothea was a member of Daughters of the American Revolution (D.A.R.), Holy Spirit Society, Sacred Heart Altar Society, V.F.W. 817, Moose Lodge 104/209, Boone, IA, Toastmasters Club, OPUS, Catholic Women’s Study group, Parents without Partners, started 45+ Singles group that lasted years, and was a proud secretary to many of these clubs. Dorothea also attended DMACC in her late 60’s and earned her Secretarial Certification.

Mom, Mother, Grandmother, and Friend to many enjoyed having fun and sharing with anyone and all around her. Her personality and kindness displayed the love she had for life. She will be missed dearly.

Friends may call at the Church of the Sacred Heart on Monday, September 12, from 4 p.m. until 8 p.m. with a Vigil Service beginning at 7 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations are suggested to the family for them to use at their discretion for her wishes.

Schroeder-Reimers Memorial Chapel at Sixth and Marshal streets is assisting the family with arrangements.
