Phyllis Mortenson, age 94, formerly of Radcliffe, IA, died on July 7, 2022, at Bethany Life Communities in Story City, IA.
Phyllis Ilene Mortenson was born on November 26, 1927 on a farm near Kamrar, IA. She was the only child born to Thomas Daniel and Evelyn Juanita (Hemmen) Arends.
Phyllis received her education by attending rural school though the eighth grade and went on to high school in Kamrar graduating with the Class of 1945. After high school, she attended Fort Dodge Beauty Academy and worked as a hairdresser in Jewell, IA.
On February 1, 1948, Phyllis was united in marriage to Allan Mortenson at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, IA. After their marriage, they farmed west of Radcliffe. Phyllis had sideline selling for Fuller Brush. After her youngest child graduated from high school, Phyllis cleaned houses for many years retiring at 85 years of age.
In 1991 Phyllis moved to Radcliffe and lived there until 2011 when she moved to Cedar Place in Story City. She spent the last year at Bethany Life where she passed away on Thursday, July 7, 2022.
Phyllis was a member of the Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Radcliffe where she had been active in W.E.L.C.A. Phyllis enjoyed gardening, cooking, keeping her house clean and spending time with family and friends.
Those remaining to cherish her memory include her three daughters, Kathleen Mortenson of Fort Calhoun, NE, Nola Mortenson Barger and her husband Gary of Nevada, IA and Sandra Light and her husband Mark of Adel, IA; five grandchildren Jennifer Kemp (Rick), Joy Geck (David), Kathryn King (Dan), Joseph Light (Tiffany) and Thomas Light; three grandchildren Samuel Geck, Leo Geck and Averi King; along with many other relatives and friends.
Phyllis was preceded in death by her parents, her husband and her son Daniel.
