Shirley Jane Brandt, 81. a long-time resident of Webster City and Hamilton County, died on January 2nd at Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines due to complications following surgery on Nov. 18.

She was born March 7, 1922 the fifth of seven children of Harley and Rose Hadaway. She grew up on the family farm south of Stanhope, and was a graduate of Stanhope Community Schools. Except for brief periods of residence in California, Arizona, Texas and Virginia, she then lived in Webster City the rest of her life.

Until 1976, Shirley was married for 32 years to Vernon K. "Bud" Brandt Sr., a former Webster City resident, Hamilton County deputy sheriff, and foreman at Maudlin's Construction Company. They had three sons, all graduates of Webster City High School. They include Vernon K. "Buddy" Brandt, Jr., class of 1964, who died in 1996; Randall S. Brandt, class of 1968, currently residing in Anchorage, Alaska; and Thomas H.H. Brandt, class of 1971, currently residing in Honolulu, Hawaii.

Shirley was primarily a homemaker and mother, but held various part-time jobs during her married life, including positions with the Webster City Community School system and the Flower Cart. She also did volunteer work for the PTA and Cub Scouts. She then worked full-time for the Hamilton County Clerk of Court for 15 years, retiring in 1990.

Shirley was preceded in death by her brothers Bob and Kenny Hadaway, and sisters Dorothy Kitley, Arlene Bashford and Donna Twedt. In addition to her sons Randy and Tom Brandt, she is survived by one brother, Don Hadaway of Stanhope, and four grandchildren. They are Joseph Brandt, 27, Breckenridge, Colo.; Philip Brandt, 26, Tucson, Arizona, currently stationed in the Persian Gulf; Monika Brandt, 23, temporarily residing in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; and Nathan Brandt, 19, Anchorage, Alaska.

Funeral services for Shirley Brandt are open to the public and will be held on Saturday, Jan. 11, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Webster City. Visitation is scheduled for 1 p.m., followed by the service at 2 p.m. and reception in the church social hall.

Donations in Shirley's name can be sent in lieu of flowers to the New America Foundation at 1630 Connecticut Ave., Washington, DC 20009.
