Marvin B. Simonson, 76, of 837 Dryden St., Stratford, passed away at his home in Stratford on Friday morning, June 21, 2002, due to complications from cancer.

He was born on September 2, 1925 in Stratford, the son of John A. and Lillie (Wahman) Simonson. On June 16, 1946 he married LaVonne "Bonnie" Chally at Stratford. Bonnie passed away in April of 1979. On June 24, 1986 he married Alyce Nelson Chally at Las Vegas, Nevada.

Marvin was a graduate of Stratford High School and was a veteran of WW II, serving with the U.S. Navy as a diesel mechanic. He was a mechanic for Stratford Implement for a number of years and was a rural mail carrier for 22 years before retiring in 1990. He was a former mayor of Stratford.

He was a member of the Stratford Baptist Church, American Legion Frederick W. Sonksen Post #576, Bulldog Club of America, and Stratford Gun Club. Marvin was a breeder of champion bulldogs. He enjoyed riding BMW motorcycles and trapshooting with his buddies.

His parents, first wife Bonnie, and one sister, Thelma Hinman, preceded him in death.

Survivors include his wife Alyce of Stratford, one daughter and son-in-law, Linda and Ron Steward of Boone, two grandchildren, Jen Arneson and her husband Tom of Marshalltown, Erik Murken of Boone, two great-grandchildren, Samuel and Olivia Arneson of Marshalltown, two brothers and sisters-in-law, Dale and Inez Simonson of Stratford, and Earl and Annette Simonson of Charles City, nieces and nephews.

Services will be held on Monday morning, June 24, at 10:30 a.m. at the Stratford Baptist Church with Pastors James Mead and Bob Kosbau officiating. Internment with full military honors conducted by the Frederick W. Sonksen Post #576 will be in the Oakwood Cemetery north of Stratford. Friends may call at the Stark-Welin Funeral Home in Stratford on Sunday evening from 7-9 p.m. and on Monday morning at the Stratford Baptist Church from 9 a.m. until the time of service. The family will be present at the Stark-Welin Funeral home in Stratford on Sunday evening from 7-8:30 p.m. to greet friends. Stark-Welin Funeral home in Stratford is in charge of arrangements.
