Road crew worker killed in accident

F.R. Baysinger of Stratford is victim

Franklin R. Baysinger, 28, of Stratford, a construction crew worker for the Cessford Construction Co. of LeGrand, Iowa was instantly killed Saturday afternoon when a heavy highway roller toppled over onto him while he was working on a Hamilton county blacktop road two and one-half miles east of Stratford.

Officials of Sheriff Jerry Farnham's office, who investigated the tragedy, reported that it occurred at 2:45 p.m. Saturday when Baysinger was reportedly backing the heavy machine up, and it started to run off the shoulder of the road.

According to the sheriff's officials, Baysinger attempted to leap off the machine, but jumped the wrong way, and it toppled over onto him. He was reported to have been killed instantly when pinned under the roller.

Damage to the construction roller was estimated at $8,000.

Sheriff Farnham's office reported this was the second highway fatality of the year in Hamilton county, the other also being a highway worker who died of injuries following an accident on Highway 20 east of Webster City.

Funeral services for Franklin Richard Baysinger, 28, will be held Wednesday at 2 p.m. at the Stratford Lutheran church with the Rev. Robert Nelson officiating.

Burial will be in the Hardin Township cemetery south of Stratford.

Friends may call at the Hanson-Stark-Welin Funeral home in Stratford Monday from 4 to 9 p.m.; on Tuesday from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. and at the church Wednesday from 9 a.m. until the time of services.

Franklin Richard Baysinger was born March 5, 1948 in Milford, Iowa the son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Bergman.

On March 29, 1969 he married Mary Murray at the Evangelical church in Boone.

He was a construction worker for Cessford Construction Co. of LeGrand, Iowa.

He was preceded in death by one brother and his paternal grandparents.

Surviving are his wife; two sons, Stephen, 6 and Eric, 5; his parents Mr. and Mrs. Robert Bergman; his father, Orval Baysinger, Sr., of Dubuque, Iowa; two brothers, Orval Baysinger, Jr. of Stanhope and Rodney Bergman of Stratford; one sister, Candis Bergman of Stratford; his maternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Richard Pearson of Spencer and several aunts and uncles.

He was a member of the Stratford Lutheran church.
