James A. Smith, 31, of Mason City, was killed by an accidental gunshot Saturday while helping a friend move from a farm home near Garner.

Smith was the son-in-law of Mr. and Mrs. Ed Wearda of Webster City and the brother-in-law of Kenneth Wearda of Webster City. His widow, who survives, is the former Shirley L. Wearda of Webster City.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Trinity Lutheran church in Mason City. The Rev. LaVerne R. Hanson, pastor of Trinity Lutheran church will officiate with burial in the Grafton cemetery at Grafton. The Major-Erickson Funeral home in Mason City is in charge of arrangements.

The family requests that memorial gifts be given to the National Arthritis Foundation.

James A. Smith was born Aug. 31, 1937 at Grafton, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Ira Smith. He was united in marriage with Miss Shirley Wearda Oct. 22, 1966 in Webster City. For the past several years he had been employed as pricing clerk in a Mason City electrical supply company.

Survivors include his widow, his parents and two brothers, Bernard L. Smith of Minneapolis and Gary D. Smith of Grafton.
