South Hamilton Record News, Jewell, Iowa, June 30, 2021

Dorothy Jean Flygstad passed away peacefully on Wednesday, June 23, 2021 surrounded by loved ones. She was born in St. Ansgar, Iowa, the daughter of Wilmer and Elenora Rosel on May 12, 1930. Dorothy graduated from St. Ansgar High School in 1948, UNI in 1950 with a teaching certificate and Drake University where she received her Bachelor's Degree in 1970. She was married to Wayne Flygstad on Aug. 2, 1953.

Dorothy taught elementary school for 43 years, teaching in Mallard, Ellsworth, Colo and South Hamilton (24 yrs) until retiring in 1993. She had a heart for kids as demonstrated when she started the annual 5th grade trip to Springbrook State Park that kids enjoyed for many years.

Dorothy had a passion for people. You could call her anytime day or night and she would be there to offer support. Many problems were discussed at her kitchen table over a cup of coffee. She freely volunteered her time to help others in her community and south Texas.

She loved playing golf and looked forward to spending winters in south Texas each year. For several years she worked at the Jewell Golf and Country Club where she was instrumental in working with ISU to design and build a new clubhouse; many tournaments and new initiatives were started due to her guidance. She loved to travel and was always learning things. She was very creative; she enjoyed painting, sewing and several types of needlework. Some of her most beautiful work was hardanger embroidery; she anonymously provided hardanger bookmarks for all confirmands for several years. Knitting was another of her favorites, making afghans and prayer shawls.

She loved playing cards, most notably Hand and Foot, and taught her family many different types of rummy.

Dorothy is survived by her children Kathy Scheer of Ft. Collins, CO, Kendal (Cyndie) of Garland TX and Kelly of Randall, IA.

Grandchildren Cory (Jodi) Berkland of Town and Country, MO, Jason (Alisha) Berkland of Huxley, IA, Jake Scheer of Valley, NE, Megan (Jim) Hanley of Portlaise, Ireland, Amanda (Mike) Smith of Wylie TX and Christina Flygstad of Rowlett TX.
