George W. Staples, 82, died Tuesday, July 17, 2001 at his home in Jewell of a heart ailment. Memorial services will be held Friday at 10:30 a.m. at the Federated United Church of Christ in Jewell with Rev. Robert Williams to officiate. Burial of his cremains will take place at a later date. A memorial fund has been established, gifts may be sent to P.O. Box 154 in Jewell. Becker Funeral Home in Jewell is in charge of arrangements.

George Wilburn Staples was born June 5, 1919 near Iowa Falls, to Charles and Mabelle (Clair) Staples. He grew up in the Ellsworth and Jewell area. George served in the U.S. Navy from December 1941 to October 1945 in the South Pacific attaining the rank of boatswain's mate. On May 14, 1946 George married Virginia Hudson of Webster City at the Federated Church parsonage in Jewell. They farmed in the Ellsworth area from 1949 to 1972. George retired in 1970 due to ill health and they moved to Jewell in 1972. He was a member of the Federated United Church of Christ and the American Legion Post in Jewell.

George is survived by his wife, Virginia Staples of Jewell, two daughters and sons-in-law, Connie and Rev. Lanny Carlson of Terrill, and Georgia and Denver Widick of Badger, two sons and a daughter-in-law, Monte and Lori Neese Staples of Ankeny and Randy Staples of Webster City; nine grandchildren, three great-grandchildren; four brothers, Charles, Russell and Richard, all of Jewell, and Kenneth of Gilmore City; five sisters, Clarice Broom of Huntington, Ind., Florence Frick of Rome, Ind., Donna Janssen of Jewell, Emma Kerns of Phoenix, Ariz., and Mabelle Romp of Stanhope; and many nieces and nephews. George was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Lester.
