Monday, June 11, 2001 (corrected obituary)

Melburne (Mel) Thorson, 88, Williams, died Monday, June 4, 2001 at Heritage Care Center in Iowa Falls. Funeral services will be Tuesday at 10:30 a.m. at the United Methodist Church in Williams, with Rev. Darwin Moore officiating. Burial will be in the Williams Cemetery. Visitation will be at the United Methodist Church on Monday from 6:30 - 8:30 p.m.

Melburne Thorson was born May 6, 1913, the son of Peter and Anna Nibe Thorson. He was a graduate of Randall High School. He married Hazel Marie Couser on August 10, 1935 at Zearing. He was self-employed as a farmer and electrician. Mr. Thorson served as mayor of Williams for six years, served on the County Extension Committee for many years, the ASCS Committee, was active in SALT organization, held many offices at the Williams United Methodist Church including Administrative chairman. He was also chairman of the Hamilton County 4-H and Youth Committee and chairman of the Hamilton County Extension Council.

Survivors are his wife, Hazel, Williams, one daughter and son-in-law, Lois and Russ Lawson of St. Charles, Mo., one son and daughter-in-law, Delmar and Virginia Thorson of Merced, Calif., three granddaughters, Cindy "Cid" Lawson of St. Charles, Mo., Kathleen Thorson of Burbank, Calif., and Lesli Thorson of Merced, Calif.; two grandsons, Mark Lawson and wife Pam Lawson of Chesterfield, MO., and Eric Thorson and wife Christy Thorson of Sacramento, Calif., one great-granddaughter, Kirsten Lawson; one brother, Larry Thorson of Des Moines and a sister, Pearl Simpson of Clarion.

Memorials may be directed to the Williams United Methodist Church. Surls Funeral Home in Williams was in charge of arrangements.
