Ackley man dies in treacherous winter weekend

An Ackley man died in a one-car accident that was but one of many in a week-end that kept area law enforcement officers answering almost non-stop calls for help.

The fatality occurred Sunday afternoon on the Hamilton/Webster County line on new Highway 20. Jimmie W. Danekas, 67, Ackley, was eastbound on Highway 20 when he attempted to pass a slower moving vehicle and lost control, according to the Iowa Highway Patrol. Danekas' 1990 Dodge Ram pickup truck slid into the south ditch, rolled over, and came to rest on its wheels. The driver was ejected during the mishap and became pinned under the left rear of the vehicle, according to the Patrol report.

Danekas was transported to Hamilton Hospital and later LifeFlighted to Mercy Hospital in Des Moines. An obituary was not available this morning.

Jimmie W. Danekas, 68, Ackley, died Sunday, Feb. 11, 2001 at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines following a one vehicle accident west of Webster City on Hwy. 20. Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at the Foster Funeral Home with Rev. Paul Hegstrom officiating. Burial will be in the Willwood Cemetery at Rockford, Ill. Visitation will be at the Foster Funeral Home from 5-9 p.m. Wednesday and prior to the service on Thursday. Military rites will be conducted at the funeral home by American Legion Post #191 of Webster City.

Jimmie Wayne Danekas, son of Raymond and Edna Taylor Danekas, was born May 2, 1932 at Franklin Grove, Ill. He graduated from high school at Rockford Ill. He served with the U.S. Army, 517th Military Police Company - 9th Division from February 1951 to January 1954. On June 11, 1955, he married Marjory Carlson at Wheaton, Ill. The couple resided in Rockford. He served with the U.S. Air Force from May 1956 to June 1960 at Lackland Air Force Base in Texas and the 1608th Air Transport Wing at Charleston, S.C. He had worked at a dairy in Rockford, a printer at Hahn-Hogg Liquor Company in Chicago, the O's Print Shop in Aplington, a driver for Warren Transport and from 1979 to 1996, as a driver for Decker Truck Lines in Fort Dodge. In 1997, he started the Caring and Sharing Ministries at Ackley.

He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Melody and Mike Burtnett, Webster City, sons and daughters-in-law, Terry and Deborah Danekas of Nashville, Tenn., Jimmie and Donna Danekas of Saledo, Texas, Dean and Eilene Danekas, Leavenworth, Kan., Allen and Melinda Danekas, Roberts, Wis., and six grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and a sister, Gayla Sue Danekas.

He was pastor at the Caring and Sharing Ministries at Ackley, chaplain for the Life Skills International, a member of the Nobles of the Mystic Shrine--Medinah Temple and Order of Eastern Star, both at Cedar Falls.
