WEBSTER CITY MAN, SON DIE IN AUTO ACCIDENT

Earl F. Roberts, 63, of Webster City, and his son, Ronald Roberts, 37, RFD, Fort Dodge, were killed early this morning in a one-car accident on Highway 20 about six miles east of Fort Dodge.

Authorities who investigated the mishap, which was discovered at about 8 a.m. by a passing motorist, believed a tire had blown out on the auto which was heading east. The car reportedly skidded on along the shoulder and down into a shallow ditch for about 900 feet before finally plunging into a 15-foot deep drainage ditch. The car was badly damaged by the impact.

The accident was investigated by the Iowa Highway Patrol and the Webster County sheriff's office. Authorities indicated the accident may have occurred between midnight and 3 a.m., and there was a possibility that exposure was a contributing cause of death in addition to the injuries suffered by the men.

Authorities found a German Shepherd dog, which had been uninjured in the accident, standing guard over the car, and the Fort Dodge dog catcher had to be called to remove the animal.

Both bodies were taken to the Laufersweilers funeral chapel in Fort Dodge where services are pending.

Ronald Roberts is survived by his wife; one daughter, Barbara; a son, Donald, both at home; his mother, Mrs. Thomas Nodland of Klemme, Iowa; three brothers, Franklin Roberts of Williams, Roger Roberts of Tama, Donald Roberts of Callender, and a sister, Mrs. Charles Takle of Ankeny.

Ronald Roberts was born in Webster City and attended schools here. He was married in 1955 at Mason City and the couple moved to the Fort Dodge area where they lived northeast of that community.

Earl Roberts was employed as a truck driver for the Cashway Lumber Co. for many years but had retired a year ago in January.
