Webster City Freeman, Webster City, Iowa, Monday, December 9, 1918
Albert Merritt, the twenty-four year old son of Mrs. W.J. Caruth, passed away in the hospital at Cherokee yesterday morning at 3 o'clock following an illness with pneumonia, which developed from Spanish influenza. Private services will be held from the Caruth home on Second street at 3:30 o'clock tomorrow afternoon, with Dr. R.T. Chipperfield of the Methodist church conducting the service.
Especially tragic is the story of this bright lad, who a few years ago figured in a runaway accident, when he was thrown from a buggy on the Bank street bridge. The injuries then sustained were of such a character that he has at intervals received treatment in the state institution, where he contracted the disease which caused his death.
[headstone at Graceland Cemetery, Webster City, Iowa lists him as William Albert Merritt]
