Geraldine “Gerry” Mabel Ackerman, 86, of Fort Dodge formerly of Blairsburg, passed away after a courageous battle with cancer on Friday, September 18, 2020 at Friendship Haven in Fort Dodge.

Gerry was born on November 26, 1933 in Lehigh to Leo Gibson “Gib” and Ethel Smith. She graduated from Lehigh Schools. On December 5, 1952 she was united in marriage to Darrell F. Ackerman in Lehigh. She had worked many years as a secretary for Northeast Hamilton and Webster City School Districts. Gerry enjoyed time with her family, gardening, quilting, and volunteering at the Blairsburg City Park caring for the flowers.

She is survived by her three sons, Dwight (Becky) Ackerman of Clear Lake, Jeff (Mary) Ackerman of Florissant, MO, Dennis (Sue) Ackerman of Boone; three grandchildren, Kathy Ackerman (James Huse), Jessica Ackerman and Daniel (Beth) Ackerman; four great-grandchildren, Alix (Nate), Andrea (Nate), Alicia (Zachary) and Henry; four great-great-grandchildren, Tavin, Myla, Finn and Rylan; sisters, Sharon Shilling of Fort Dodge, Donna (Bo) Brasfield of Taylor, TX; brother, Karl “Skip” Smith of Fort Dodge and several extended family and friends.

Gerry was preceded in death by her husband, Darrell on March 27, 2020; her parents; brother in infancy, Leo Gibson Smith, Jr and sister, Rosemary Thomas.

Memorials may be left in Gerry’s memory to the Mayo Clinic Cancer Center, 200 1st St SW, Rochester, MN 55905. Condolences for the family may be mailed to Dennis Ackerman, 416 S. Boone St., Boone, IA 50036.

A joint memorial service for Gerry and Darrell will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, September 26, 2020 at Foster Funeral and Cremation Center, with burial for Gerry to follow at Blairsburg Cemetery. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service. Social distancing will be maintained, and masks are required.
