On September 8, 2020 Neoma Elizabeth Kurtz (affectionately known as Skeeter to her family), received her wings and went to fly with the angels. She was 89 years old. Her new mission takes her to a wonderful place where she will be reunited with her husband Steve, her parents Jim and Hetty and her sister Ruth. She will most likely want to get back to socializing and “visiting” with long lost loved ones and friends as well as playing bridge, dancing, swimming and roller skating to her heart’s content.

Neoma was born on June 30, 1932 in Buffalo Center, Iowa. She was actively involved in her high school marching band where she was a baton twirler and played the French horn. She attended Mount Mercy College where she majored in education. Her love of children led her to teach in elementary schools. She had a strong preference for teaching third grade and taught in Elkader, Eagle Grove and Webster City, Iowa. Both of her children, Ruth and David, were lucky enough to have her as their third grade teacher and calling her mom in school was always tolerated.

Neoma was more than happy to be a central figure in her children and grandchildren’s lives and she had a propensity to spoil all of them.

We have much love and gratitude for everything our mother/grandmother did for us throughout her life. She gave so much and asked for so little in return. Thank you mom for always being there for us, for teaching us, listening to us, loving and forgiving us and for always paving the way. We will work hard to reach the standard you set. R.I.P. sweet lady. You were magnificent.

Neoma is survived by her daughter Ruth Herring and grandson Christian Herring of New York; son David Boland and grandson Bryce Boland of Minnesota; brother James (Denny) Gibson of Illinois, and members of her very special extended family.

A proper sendoff for our beloved mother will be held at such time when it becomes safe to travel to the state of Iowa.
