Duane Franklin Maakestad passed away peacefully on February 19, 2020 at the Hubbard Care Center. Boeke Funeral Home of Radcliffe is caring for Duane and his family. Duane was born June 29, 1921 on a farm north of Radcliffe, IA. His parents were Mabel Hinderaker and Leonard Maakestad.
He attended rural school and Radcliffe High School for one year. He then was needed to help on the family farm. During this time, he also worked as a hired man for several area farmers. He was a hard worker and took pride in providing high quality work in anything he did. Duane received his GED certificate in April 1970.
He married Mabel Mason on March 3, 1944 on the family farm and they enjoyed 75 years of marriage together. He was a kind, considerate and loving husband.
He farmed in the Radcliffe area until retiring and moving to Radcliffe in 1986. He never really retired from farming as he was still helping his son, Dale, with whatever he could. Duane worked part-time in the Hamilton County Assessor’s office for several years. Duane enjoyed playing music by ear and for several years would play his Hammond organ at area social events. He was very supportive when Mabel and several of the boys attended college while he was farming.
Duane was a member of Our Savior’s Lutheran Church and the Kiwanis Club for many years. He also enjoyed sports, particularly baseball, and spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Family, religion and music were so important to him and brought him much happiness.
He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Clifford and Donald (Bud) Maakestad.
