Florence M. Hendrickson, 96, died Thursday, July 20, 2006 at the Cottage at Fairmeadows in Wyoming, Minnesota. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, with a luncheon following, at the Federated United Church of Christ at Jewell, with Rev. Bob Miller officiating. Burial will be in the Graceland Cemetery at Webster City. Visitation will be at the Foster Funeral and Cremation Center in Webster City from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday and prior to the service at the church on Wednesday.
Florence M. Berkler, daughter of John and Lillie Shannon Berkler, was born on the family farm near Lytton, Iowa. She received her education in the Lytton school system and graduated from Lytton Consolidated high school. She furthered her education at Buena Vista College and Iowa State teachers College. She taught in rural schools in Sac and Calhoun counties. On June 3, 1939, she married Aldis Hendrickson at Lincoln, NE. The couple started farming south of Kamrar on Aldis's parents farm. They were involved in farming for 28 years. A hobby then turned into a photography business for Florence and Aldis. He later become a radio engineer, they retired from farming. Aldis died April 7, 1975. She remained on the farm, living in the home they so proudly built together. She moved from the farm in 1999 to her daughters home at Minnesota where she resided for four years. She moved to Meadows on Fairview in Wyoming, MN, over two years ago.
Mrs. Hendrickson is survived by son, Max S. Hendrickson of Forest Lake, MN; daughter and son-in-law, Joan and Donald of Marine on the St. Croix, MN; grandson, Donald A. Berry of Stillwater, MN; great-grandson, Ethan G. Berry; sisters, Dorothy Redenbaugh and Marjorie Miller, both of Storm Lake; brother, John D. Shannon of Lytton; a niece, nephews, cousins and many friends.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, in infancy; sister, Betty Davis; sister-in-law, Norma Berkler.
She was confirmed in the First Presbyterian Church at Lytton and taught Sunday school there for many years. She later joined the Federated United Church of Christ at Jewell, where she was a member of the Women's Fellowship. Other memberships included the Jewell Federation of Women's Clubs (Fortnightly Study Club); the Get-Together Club; Hamilton County Historical Society; Hamilton County Heritage Hunters; she was a charter member of the Thomas Munson Chapter of Colonial Dames XVII Century, named for an ancestor. Her interest in 4-H began as a youth in Calhoun County and continued with her leadership of the Ellsworth Early Risers. She was also active on the Hamilton County Extension Council. She was fond of gardening and beautifying her surroundings. The flower shows at the Hamilton County Fair and also the Iowa State Fair brought home many prizes, sweepstakes and much enjoyment. In addition, she enjoyed sewing, reading, genealogy and traveling. She loved the time spent scrapbooking with Joan and writing a story of her own life. Holidays and weekends were special and brought her much delight.
