Leslie Peterson, age 81, of Jewell, died Thursday, May 11, 2006 at the Israel Family Hospice House in Ames. Funeral services will be 2:00 p.m. Saturday, May 13, 2006 at Bethesda Lutheran Church in Jewell with Pastor W. Michael Werner to officiate. Burial with military honors will follow at Evergreen Cemetery in Jewell. Visitation is Friday evening from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Becker Funeral Home in Jewell. Memorial contributions may be made to Bethesda Lutheran Church in Jewell or Israel Family Hospice House in Ames.

Leslie Martin Peterson was born in Jewell on Sunday, October 19, 1924 to Anton and Ida (Sundsbo) Peterson. He grew up in the Jewell area, graduating from Jewell High School in 1941. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II in the China-Burma-India Theatre. On June 6, 1948 Leslie married June Burlette Laurine Ness at the Salem Church in Lake Mills. They farmed in the Jewell area, moving to town after retirement. Leslie then worked as a sales associate for Fjelland Real Estate. He was a baptized and confirmed member of Bethesda Lutheran Church in Jewell, the Jewell Lions Club, the national and state China-Burma-India Veterans groups and served as a township trustee.

Leslie is survived and will be greatly missed by his wife, June of Jewell; two daughters, Linda East of Cedar Rapids and Lori (Charles) Buck of Jewell; grandchildren, Stacy (Michael) Bowdish, Bradley (Courtney) East, Anthony Buck and Felicia Buck; a step granddaughter, Tina Buck; a great granddaughter, Alexis Bowdish; two step great granddaughters, Ashley and Shelby; two sisters, Naomi (Lloyd) Sabby of Estherville and Ina (Lee) Sabby of Valley City, North Dakota; five brothers, Marvin (Madeline) Peterson of Ames, Arling (Ruth) Peterson of Ellsworth, Robert (Pat) Peterson of Jewell, Sterling (Bette) Peterson of Jewell and Rev. Stanley (Marlys) Peterson of Hampton; a sister-in-law, Thelma (Jerry) White of Webster City; and many nieces and nephews. Leslie was preceded in death by his grandparents, parents, mother and father-in-law, Beulah and Alfred Ness and his son-in-law, Dan East.
