Funeral services for David Schwandt, 64, will be held Friday at 10:30 a.m. at the Henry-Olson Funeral Chapel in Estherville, with Rev. Glenn Bohmer officiating. Visitation is 4-8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral chapel. Burial will be in Graceland Cemetery, Webster City, at 3 p.m. Friday.

David Dale Schwandt, the son of Herman and Nellie (Vulgamott) Schwandt, was born March 6, 1942 in Webster City, Iowa and departed this life on Monday, March 6, 2006 at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Sioux Falls, South Dakota at the age of 64 years old.

He received his education in the Webster City schools. Dave then served in the United States Army from March of 1960 through March of 1963. Dave was stationed in both Korea and Germany in infantry, combat and engineer divisions. Following his honorable discharge from military service, Dave returned to the Webster City area. On June 9, 1963, Dave was united in marriage to Janice Miller. After their marriage the couple made their home on a farm in the Webster City area. Janice died December 29, 1965. From 1966 through 1987, Dave was employed at various farm implement dealerships in Westside, Wall Lake and Laurens, Iowa. In 1981, Dave met his beloved companion Charlene Mackie. In 1987, they moved to Estherville together and Dave went to work at a farm implement dealership. In 1991, he started working for the Emmet County Conservation Board. Char died October 31, 2002. When Dave was younger in his leisure time he enjoyed shooting pool and playing golf. The most special times in Dave's life were the time spent with his family and friends and most especially his grandchildren.

Dave was a lifetime member of the VFW. He was very active in the VFW Posts in the communities that he lived. He had served as Post Commander in both Laurens and VFW Post 3388 in Estherville. He served twice as Commander of VFW District 10 in Iowa. He was an active member of the Military Order of the Cooties and also served as State Commander of the Cooties. Dave donated countless hours of his time to his local VFW posts involved in the post's activities and parades.

Left to cherish Dave's memory are his brother, Dick Schwandt of Mission, Texas; his sister, Charlotte Keast of Webster City; his three daughters, Terry Schossow and her husband, Dave of Laurens; Sandra Snow and her husband, Dana of Marathon; Judy Schmidt and her husband, Tom of Laurens; his five grandchildren, Nikki; Machelle; T.J.; Chris; Tracy; and two great-grandchildren, Dawson; Jayden; several nieces and nephews, Stephen; Diana; Jeff; Connie; Doug; Elaine; and a host of friends. Preceding Dave in death were his wives, Janice and most important, Charlene; his parents; niece, Carol Helton; two nephews, Leslie G. and Leslie L.
