He came to America in 1850, has been a member of the Swedish M.E. Church for fifty years and was pastor in charge of Sheldahl and New Sweden from 1874-79. He was an ordained deacon and elder.

The bereavement is keenly felt by his aged wife, three daughters, one son and fourteen grandchildren, besides a large relation and the whole township. Two wives and five children have gone before him. His life has been a benediction to South Marion and has been spotless and sincere.

The funeral was conducted from the Swedish M.E. Church Sunday morning by the pastor, Rev. Carl P. Eklund assisted by Revs. John Linn and J.E. Berggren. The remains were laid to rest in the Olson Cemetery (South Marion Cemetery). He was greatly beloved by all and he will be greatly missed now when his place is empty. Peace over the dust.

Obituary

Peter J. Peterson was born in Sweden May 11, 1824. Died at his home near Stratford Oct. 2, 1903, in his eightieth year. Came to America in 1850. He was one of the pioneer settlers of Marion township, having settled on his farm here in 1866, and knew all about the privations and trials of the settlers of that early day.

He united with the Methodist Episcopal church in 1854 and was a faithful member of church ever since, having for years been a local preacher and was for five years in the active ministry, serving the churches at Sheldahl and New Sweden, Iowa, with marked success and would undoubtedly have remained in the pastorate longer if his health had permitted him to do so. He was a man of sterling qualities, noble Christian character, serving God from principle; was loyal to his family, his God and to the church of his choice.

He leaves an aged wife, who has been his companion for nearly thirty-eight years; three daughters - Mrs. Isaac Castile of Salina, Ia., Mrs. J.A. Strand and Mrs. C.A. Swanson of Stratford and one son, J.L. Peterson of Webster City, who will ever hold him in sacred memory for his godly life. Besides the immediate family he leaves other relatives and a large circle of friends, especially in the neighborhood where he has lived so long. He will be greatly missed in the home and in the church - the work which was so dear to his heart.

The funeral which was held Sunday, Oct. 4, from the South Marion Swedish M.E. church, was one of the largest ever held in the neighborhood. It was conducted by the pastor, Rev. C.P. Eklund - text 1 Cor. 15:55-57 - assisted by two pioneer M.E. preachers - Revs. John Linn and J.E. Berggren - who spoke with much love and tenderness of the departed. The remains were laid to rest in the South Marion cemetery. P.J. Peterson is gone but not forgotten - the influence of his life remains.

Faithful servant of God,
Life's work well done,
Life's trials won,
Now comes rest.

We shall meet beyond the river when the surges cease to roll.
