Obituary
M.R. Peterson

Funeral services for Marcus R. Peterson were held in the local Methodist church at 2 o'clock Saturday afternoon, following a brief family service in the residence. The Rev. Stanley Jensen, pastor of the South Marion Methodist church, was in charge of the services and he was assisted by the Rev. Paul R. Johnson of the local Methodist church. Mrs. Paul Johnson sang, "One Sweetly Solemn Thought," and the Rev. A.E. Appelquist of the Baptist church sang a solo. The pallbearers were Oscar Johnson, E.T. Frederickson, John Simonson, J.O. Westrum, August Johnson and Reuben Erickson.

At the close of the services the remains were interred in the South Marion cemetery.

Marcus R. Peterson was born on April 2, 1867 in Dodge township, Boone county. He died in his home in the east part of Stratford on Jan. 8, 1936 at the age of 68 years, 7 months, 6 days. He was the only child of the late Lars F. and Anna Charlotte [Carlson] Peterson, who were pioneer settlers of Boone county.

He received his early education in the rural schools of Dodge township and as a young man was graduated from the business college of Drake University in Des Moines.

On Dec. 23, 1888, he was united in marriage to Miss Esther Steinfeldt, who survives him. Four children were born of this union: Myrtle A. Anderson of Jefferson, Mable Watts of Grand Falls, Mont., George W. Peterson of Stratford and Clarice Daniels, who died Mar. 1, 1922. He is also survived by seven grandchildren and a great many friends.

When he was 21 years of age his father gave him the full management of the large farm homestead in Boone county and for a number of years he successfully farmed and raised cattle there. He was a very good manager and possessed a great deal of business acumen, enjoying the work of farming and raising fine cattle.

When his father died on Aug. 23, 1911, he made arrangements for the building of a fine new home on the farm in the east part of town and in December, 1912, the family moved into it. In March, 1933, his health began to fail and since that time he had spent much of his time in his home, being unable to attend to his usual duties only part of the time. During these years he had suffered much pain and especially did he suffer a great deal the last weeks before his death. He left many friends here who extend sincere condolences to the bereaved wife and children.
