Hurt on Highways

Violent death took a holiday from highways in the state, although numerous persons were injured in automobile accidents.

The five automobile victims during the extended weekend included two small children. The victims:

A month old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Reed Ihnen of near Milford; William Fischer, 3, of Des Moines; Embert Peterson, 55, Stanhope farmer; James Jobe, 34, Keokuk WPA worker, and Mrs. Z.G. Wait, 58, of Erie, Ill., who died at Maquoketa.

STANHOPE MAN IS KILLED AS AUTOS COLLIDE

Funeral Services for Embert Peterson to Be Wednesday

Embert Peterson, 47, Stanhope, was instantly killed early yesterday morning in a headon collision at the junction of highways No. 60 and 30 in Boone county.

His auto collided with a Packard car driven by H.C. Sheridan, 48, of Omaha, proprietor of the Omaha Cold Storage company, who suffered a crushed chest. His companion, Miss Ruth Munson, 30, also of Omaha, suffered a knee fracture and a severe head cut, the result of her being driven through the windshield. Both are expected to recover. They are at the Boone hospital.

Boone county authorities say there will be no inquest into the death of Peterson.

Sheridan was on his way home from Des Moines. Peterson was eastbound on No. 30. The cars collided at the "Y" junction of the two highways. The Peterson car overturned. Peterson was thrown out and was dead when picked up.

Funeral services will be held at the home of his stepmother, Mrs. Nels Peterson, on the farm 3-1/2 miles southwest of Stanhope, Wednesday afternoon at 1:30 o'clock. The Rev. C.F. Schmidt, of Stanhope, officiating. Foster's will be in charge.

Embert Peterson was a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Nels Peterson. The former was president of the Farmers Savings bank at the time of his death in 1937. He leaves two sons, Harold, 21, and Arlin, 15; his niece, Dorothy Helen Gould; his stepmother, Mrs. Huldah Peterson, wife of Nels Peterson by a second marriage; his uncles, David Lund, of Stratford, and Frank J. Lund, Webster City, and an aunt, Mrs. August Carlson, of Stratford, besides a number of cousins on both sides of the family.
