Jonas Vedeen

The funeral services for Jonas Vedeen were held in the Baptist church here Sunday afternoon at 2:00 o'clock following a service in the Mrs. George Vedeen home at 1:30 o'clock. The services were in charge of the pastor of the church, the Rev. Frances B. Sorley. A ladies quartette sang three songs, "Rock of Ages," "Nearer My God to Thee" and "Jesus Savior, Pilot Me." The quartette was composed of Mrs. Oscar Borg, Mrs. Ralph Freese, Misses Vernice Johnson and Pauline Naslund. Mrs. Francis Sorley played the accompaniments. At the close of the services the remains were placed in the family burial lot in the South Marion cemetery. The pallbearers were six nephews of the deceased: Elmer Peterson, Floyd Peterson, Henry Peterson, John Peterson, Ed. Stoner and Fred Stoner.

Jonas Vedeen was born in Hälsingland, Sweden, Sept. 7, 1857, and died in the home of his sister-in-law, Mrs. Helen Vedeen, Nov. 4, 1937, at the age of 80 years, 1 month, 28 days. A slight stroke of paralysis three weeks before his death sent him to his bed from which he never arose. He was never in much pain but was a patient sufferer, never complaining to those whose kind hands ministered his needs.

He came to America in April, 1867, when 9 years old, with his parents [Jonas & Ella Ericsdotter Vedeen], brothers and sisters, locating in Hamilton county which has ever since been his home. He attended the rural schools of the community and grew to manhood on his father's farm. There he lived a quiet life and after the death of his parents continued to work on the farm with his brother, George. Sixteen years ago the two brothers retired and moved into Stratford.

He was the last one of the family, having been preceded in death by his brother, George, by his three sisters, Mrs. Swen Stoner, Mrs. Peter Peterson and Miss Sophie Vedeen. He leaves to mourn his death one niece, eight nephews, and many friends who knew him as a quiet and home-loving neighbor and associate. He did not get out much but greatly enjoyed the visits of his friends when they came to see him.

He was not a member of any church although he testified of his faith and trust in the Lord Jesus Christ. The 14th chapter of John was his favorite passage of scripture. Many marked pages in the old Swedish Bible shows that he loved to read the word of God.
