Obituary
Mrs. George Vedeen

Last rites for Mrs. George Vedeen were held Wednesday afternoon at 2 o'clock in the local Baptist church following a prayer service in her home at 1:30 o'clock. The services were conducted by the pastor, the Rev. James Selander. At the church service he used for his text the following from Deuteronomy 33:27, "The eternal God is thy refuge, and underneath are the everlasting arms." Two songs were sung by Mrs. Everett Bergman and Mrs. Marie Martens, "The River of Life" and "When I've Gone the Last Mile." Mrs. James Selander played the accompaniments. Interment was in the South Marion cemetery with the following casket bearers Everett Bergman, Elmo Westrum, Marvin Westrum, Fred Swanson, Elmer Angstrom, Leonard Angstrom.

Helen Vedeen, nee Bergman, was born in Edsbyn, Helsingland, Sweden on May 3, 1883, and died in her home here June 7, 1942, at the age of 59 years, 1 month, 4 days. Her death came as a welcome release from several years of patient suffering. During the last months she had been bedridden and a short time before her death suffered an attack of pneumonia.

She came to Webster City from Sweden in December, 1903 and shortly afterwards came to this community. Here she was united in marriage with George Vedeen in February 1906. For a number of years they resided on their farm, sortheast of Stratford, moving to Stratford in 1920 which had since been the home of deceased.

She was preceded in death by her father and her husband, who died a few years ago. Surviving are her mother and two sisters, Mrs. Fred Carlson, of Stratford, who had given her sister loving care the past several years, and a sister in Sweden. There are also several surviving nieces and nephews.

As long as her health permitted she was a regular attendant at all services of the local Baptist church of which she had been a member for many years. A true Christian she never failed in her duty to her God and to her friends.

In dark tomorrow
Take courage sorrowing heart,
life's not lost
In death, but rests spirit released
on yonder shore
There to abide, till morn when all
earth's ills,
Shall lose their wintry breath,
no more to chill
Human hear's with sorrow.

It's dark today,
Yet resolve to conquer fear,
In undimmed hope we see a star
of logic, twinkling on life's
western slope,
That if trees and flowers, seeds
and acorns dead,
Rise from wintry graveyards, life
again to wed.
So shall we rise today.
