Obituary

Hedlind

Andrew Hedlind died at his residence in this city Thursday, September 7th, at 11 p.m. For several years past he had been a sufferer from chronic rheumatism, during which time he had withstood the ravages of numerous acute Exacerbations, the last of which occurred the latter part of June. He at once sought relief at Colfax, as had been his habit in the past. There it was learned that his malady, as is its custom, had produced severe heart lesions, which rendered this organ incompetent to withstand the severe strain to which it was now being subjected and under which later gave away. Unable, on account of the heart complications, to stand the baths, he was soon forced to return home without the relief he had obtained during former visits. Various physicians were consulted and but little encouragement offered.

Upon his return to Stratford his relatives and friends were informed that the end was not far distant. He not doubt was himself aware of the dangerous condition he was in, but hoping against hope to spare his devoted wife and protect and shield her in this as he had done during the past years of their married life. He often expressed a belief that he would be able to be around again well as ever. In the death chamber standing about the dying man were: His wife and mother, two brothers and a sister, and little Vernie, who has made her home with them since babyhood, and to whom he was all but a father. His wife's father and mother, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Crane and Mr. and Mrs. Oscar Atkinson and daughter.

About 5 p.m. it being evident that dissolution was near at hand, his condition was made known to him, to which he replied "I am not afraid to die. It is better to die then live on and suffer." Then looking at his family circle about his couch; to their presence he gave his approval by one of his most pleasant and natural smiles as if to say, "I am satisfied. It is just as I would have it" and bade them all good bye. From this time until death he grew weaker and weaker and at 11 p.m. his heart refusing to longer respond to actificial stimulation, he closed his eyes, gave one short gasp and all was over. His soul had taken flight to "that undiscovered country, from whose borne no traveler returns."

He had remained conscious until the last and never amid all his suffering and the aggravated condition of his disease did he lose hope.

Andrew Hedlind was born 7 1/2 miles northeast of Stratford on August 12, 1871 and at the time of his death was 34 years and 14 days old. He was married to Francis E. Crane January 4, 1897. He was baptized by Rev. W.L. Crowe and united with the Church of God in October, 1899. He has lived a consistent, honest, kind, and unassuming life and was loved by all who knew him.

The funeral was held at the residence Sunday afternoon conducted by H.M. Lucas, assisted by Rev. Benjamin and was attended by a large concourse of friends. The remains were laid to rest in the Olson cemetery.
