VERN CARLSON RITES MONDAY

Injured Fatally In Des Moines

(The Register's Iowa News Service.)
STRATFORD, IA - Funeral services will be held here Monday for Verne Carlson, 59, Boone, Ia., mechanic who was injured fatally when struck by a truck in Des Moines Thursday night. He died Friday.

Services will be held first at 2 p.m. at the home of Carlson's mother, Mrs. J.A. Carlson, followed by other services at 2:30 p.m. in Calvary Methodist Church in Stratford. Burial will be in South Marion Cemetery near here.

Carlson, an unmarried man, had been employed as a timekeeper by a plumbing company at Fort Des Moines.

Carlson was one of the 42 original defendants in the Sir Francis Drake mail fraud trial in Chicago in 1935 and 1936. He was one of those acquitted of using the mails to defraud in connection with gathering the $1,350,000 Drake estate fund.

The list of defendants was headed by Oscar M. Hartzell, alleged leader of the Drake estate scheme. Hartzell and seven others were convicted of using the mails to defraud more than 70,000 midwesterners.

Late in 1936 a federal judge dismissed the indictment against Hartzell. But he had to remain in the government hospital at Springfield, Mo., to serve out a 10-year sentence imposed on a previous conviction on a similar mails charge at Sioux City, Ia. He was transferred to the hospital from Leavenworth penitentiary.

The federal judge in Chicago granted a defense motion for a new trial on the grounds that Hartzell had been found insane since his conviction. He then dismissed the indictment.
