Mary Eugenia Carlson

Mary Eugenia (Peterson) Carlson was born in Horn socken, Ostergotland, Sweden, Nov. 5, 1852, and passed away at Webster City, Iowa, Dec. 23, 1949, at the age of 97 years, 1 month and 18 days. At the age of ? she came to America with her father, one sister and four brothers, her mother having died in Sweden. In 1872 she was united in marriage to Samuel Gust Carlson and they lived on a farm in Boone county until 1909, when they moved to Stratford, where they made their home until her husband passed away in 1914, when she made her home with her children. She had been a member of the Baptist church since 1877 until her death and was the oldest member of the church both in years and age. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by two sons, Charlie and Willie; one sister, Mrs. Elick (Josie) Swedlund; 4 brothers, Victor, Gust, Elick and Frank; and three grandchildren.

She is survived by three sons, Clarence and Elmer of Stratford, and Sam of Iowa Falls; also by ten grandchildren, 22 great grandchildren and four great great grandchildren, and a number of nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon at 2 o'clock in the Stratford Baptist church, conducted by the pastor, the Rev. Arthur Westerhoff, who used as his sermon text words from Philipians 3:21. Songs for the services were sung by the Rev. and Mrs. Westerhoff, with Mrs. Norman D. Erickson as accompanist.

A contribution of $20.00 was made in memory of the deceased toward a memorial organ fund for the Baptist church.

Following the services the remains were taken to the South Marion cemetery for interment. The pallbearers were: Julius Johnson, John Peterson, Fred Samuelson, Stanley Quick, Leonard Johnson and Clifford Neese.
