Helen Mertz, 94, Webster City, died Tuesday, Dec. 7, 1999 at the Hamilton Hospital. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at the First Congregational Church in Webster City with Pastor Jim Buffington officiating. Burial will be in the Graceland Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday at the Foster Funeral Home and prior to the services at the church on Friday.

Mildred Helen Forrester, daughter of Harry and Abiah Spitler Forrester, was born June 10, 1905 at Fredericksburg, Iowa. She graduated from Webster City High School in 1923 and attended Iowa State University. She was married April 8, 1928 to Harry J. Mertz in Webster City. The couple resided in Webster City. In 1931 the couple moved to Newton and returned to Webster City in 1942. She worked as a bookkeeper and operator of Forrester Dairy until the company was sold in the late 1960's to the Anderson and Erickson Dairy. Mr. Mertz died in August 1976.

She is survived by three sons and daughter-in-laws; Bob and Kim Mertz of Webster City, James Mertz of Arnolds Park, David and Gail Mertz of Las Cruces, New Mexico, seven grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, sister, Blanche Doty of Napa Valley, CA.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, one grandson, five brothers and one sister. She was a member of the First Congregational Church, Hamilton County hospital auxiliary and the Order of the Eastern Star since 1923.
