November 1933

Funeral services for the late E.A. Waller were held Wednesday afternoon at 1:30 o’clock in the family residence and at 2 o’clock in the Methodist church, and were in charge of the pastor, the Rev. S. Lumley. The altar rail of the church was well banked with a great many bouquets of beautiful floral pieces; many of which were the gifts of admiring friends. The Rev. Lumley used for his discourse words taken from the book of Job as follows: “My days are swifter than the weaver’s shuttle.” His sermon was of deep interest and went to the hearts of his audience. Three vocal selections were rendered by the Methodist mixed quartet, made up of Miss Minnie Williams, Mrs. L.M. Peterson, A.T. Johnson and L.M. Peterson, the songs being those selected for the service and were as follows: “In the Garden,” “Sometime We’ll Understand,” and “Have Thine Own Way, Lord,” The accompaniments were played on the piano by Mrs. Geo Harrison. The pallbearers were: Edward Nelson, Albert J. Swedlund, Sam Swedlund, E.W. Monson, Carl Bergman and John Quinn. The first five named are members of the board of directors of the Farmers Savings Bank of which deceased had been cashier for 23 years. Due to illness another director, Alf. Erickson, was unable to be present.

A good many people accompanied the funeral cortege to the South Marion cemetery where the remains were laid to rest.

Long before the hour set for the funeral service the church auditorium and its adjoining class rooms were filled with people who came to pay their last respects to a departed friend and in order to accommodate as many as possible chairs were placed back of the pulpit and in the choir loft and these were soon filled. Besides there was an overflow outside who could not get the service more than a half hour was required for friends to take a last look at the departed one. As a citizen of this place for so many years deceased had endeared himself to all and everyone seemed anxious to show their deep respect to him.

He had, for so many years, been identified with business interests in Stratford that he will be missed by every merchant in town. Quiet and unassuming, but always courteous and accommodating, he won for himself a place in the hearts of all peoples that will long be an empty void and his place in the bank and in this community will be difficult to fill.

Edward Andrew Waller was born in Sweden, March 16, 1874, and died very suddenly in his home here on Nov. 5, 1933, aged 59 years, 7 months, 19 days.

At the age of 13 years he came to America with his parents, brothers and sisters. For a time he was employed as a clerk in mercantile stores here and at Stanhope. Later he entered Highland Park college in Des Moines where he took a business course. During 1903 and 1904 he served as deputy county auditor under the late John A. Berggren, also of Stratford. When the Farmers Savings bank was organized here in 1910 he was elected cashier and held that position until his death.

He was married on Jan. 27, 1915 to Miss Mabel Lindberg of Lake View, who survives him. He also leaves two brothers, Carl of Stratford and Herbert of Fort Dodge, and one sister, Mrs. Alf Erickson of Stratford. His parents preceded him in death.
