October 28, 1948

Emma Amanda, last member of the pioneer family of John and Marie Poulson, was born Jan. 1, 1867, on the old homestead, two miles west of Stratford, and passed away in her home at Stratford, Oct. 18, 1948, at the age of 81 years, 9 months and 17 days.

She attended the rural schools and most of her life had been spent in this community. In 1887 she was united in marriage to Oscar F. Swanson. She was preceded in death by her husband, one son, Russell, and two daughters, Florence and Vernice.

She leaves to mourn her passing, Mrs. William Hite of Pond Creek, Okla., Garret of Valentine, Nebr., Furman of Stratford, Herschel of Des Moines, Clifford of Kennedy, Nebr., and Mrs. J.W. Wilke of Peoria, Ill. Also three grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Though her life's journey of more than fourscore years has been completed, the influence of Mrs. Swanson's life will still live in the hearts of those near and dear to her.

As a devoted wife and mother and a loyal friend, she enriched not only her own life but also the lives of those who came in contact with her. She possessed a deep affection for her home and family and a spirit of forgetfulness of self, of kindness to others, and of solicitude for their welfare. These attributes have left lasting impressions woven into the fiber of the hearts of those who mourn her loss. Even in times of pain and sorrow, her life portrayed such fortitude and courage, such strength of character and faith in her Maker, that her prayer must have also been, "God make me brave for life."

Funeral services were held Thursday afternoon, Oct. 21, at 2 o'clock in the Jackson funeral home, conducted by the Rev. E.A. Cochell. Two songs for the services were sung by Mrs. Lester Carlson, with Mrs. Ronald Bell as accompanist. The floral offerings were in charge of Mrs. Paul Erickson and Mrs. Fred Kelley.

Following the services, the remains were escorted to the South Marion cemetery for interment. The pallbearers were: Frank Poulson, Durrell Kelley, Paul Erickson, Lester Poulson, Harry Luther and Warnie Roberts of Lohrville.
