Mrs. Matilda Gustafson

Matilda Christina Samuelson, daughter of Samuel and Stina Lisa Samuelson, was born in Småland, Sweden, March 31, 1856, and died at her home east of Stratford on March 1, 1944, at the age of 87 years, 11 months, 1 day.

At the age of 15 years she came from Sweden to Moline, Ill. On Mary 31, 1874, she was married to John F. Gustafson at Toulon, Ill., and they moved to Galesburg, Ill., where they lived until they moved to Iowa in 1881. Here they settled on a farm east of Stratford where she had since made her home.

To this union six children were born, Hattie, Henry, Lottie, Charley, Martin and Rudolph. She was preceded in death by her husband, who died July 4, 1925, one son, Morton who died Dec. 31, 1917, one daughter, Mrs. Oscar Erickson, who died Jan. 8, 1942; also four brothers, Alfred, Sam, Andrew and John Lindquist.

Surviving are one daughter and three sons: Mrs. John Erickson of Stanhope; Henry and Rudolph of Stratford, and Charley of Des Moines. Also surviving are seventeen grandchildren, xx great-grandchildren and a twin sister, Mrs. Lottie Sealine of Stanhope.

She was confirmed in the Lutheran church in Sweden and attended the Lutheran church in Stratford as long as her health permitted. She will be missed by many relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held in the Lutheran church on Saturday afternoon, March 4, with the Rev. Waldo Ekeberg of Dayton in charge. Mrs. Arthur Larson and Miss Velva Berglund sang "In the Garden," "Saved by Grace" and "Nearer My God to Thee." Mrs. Lloyd Angstrom playing the organ accompaniments.

Interment was in the South Marion cemetery. The following were pallbearers: Fred and Emanuel Lindquist, Arnold and Reuben Sealine, Elmer Berggren and Elmer O. Erickson.
