Beverly Maude (Betty) Erickson, 81, of Stanhope, died at the Hamilton County Hospital in Webster City on Saturday following a heart attack. She was born July 12, 1915 in the family home near Ames, the daughter of James Edward and Helen Maude (Hurlock) Speck. She married Virgil Frederick Erickson on Dec. 28, 1938.

She attended country school and after graduation from Ames High School in 1932, she attended Iowa State College in Ames. She was a homemaker and the couple lived in Stanhope nearly all their married lives. The couple farmed and did custom work for many farmers in the area.

She attended Christian Church and participated in the church circle. She was a volunteer 4-H club leader and a garden club member.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Virgil in May of 1988, three brothers and three sisters. She is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Larry and Judy Erickson of DeKalb, Ill., Gary and Linda Erickson of Stanhope; two daughters and son-in-law, Charlotte Danet of Traverse City, Mich., Nancy and Roger Allen of Montezuma; nine grandchildren including Shelley Woodall of Ames; four great-grandchildren; one sister, Mary Ford of Stratford; and one brother, James Speck of Ames.

Services are scheduled for Tuesday at 1:30 p.m. in the Christian Church in Stanhope with Rev. Henry Grant officiating. Interment will be in the South Marion Cemetery southeast of Stratford.

Friends may call at the church from noon until the time of service. The Stark-Welin Funeral Home in Stratford is in charge of arrangements.
