Stratford Courier, Stratford, Iowa, March 23, 1950

Walter Nathanuel Carlson, son of Charlotta and Carl John Carlson, was born Jan. 29, 1890, on a farm southeast of Stratford where he lived all of his life, and died March 15, 1950, at the age of 60 years, 1 month and 16 days. He had been in poor health in later years, but the direct cause of his death was due to a heart attack.

He was baptized and confirmed in the Stratford Lutheran church. He enjoyed his home, hobbies and pets and was a friendly and kind-hearted person; always willing to help wherever he could, and always concerned about the welfare of his brothers and sisters. Truly can be said he hath done well whatever he could.

He was preceded in death by his father and mother and by two brothers, both of whom passed away in infancy. He is survived by two brothers, Clarence of Detroit, Mich.; Harry of Stratford; and three sisters, Mrs. William Monson of Livermore, Iowa, and Mrs. D.G. Gast and Ellen of Stratford, the latter with whom he resided in later years; also a niece, two nephews, other relatives and friends.

A brief prayer service was held Sunday afternoon, March 19, in the Jackson Funeral home, at which time the Rev. F.W. Hanson sang, "Jesus Keep Me Near the Cross." Funeral services were held in the Stratford Lutheran church at 2 p.m., with the pastor, the Rev. F.W. Hanson officiating. He used for his text: Eph. 2:20-22 and Acts 20:28. A mixed quartette composed of Mrs. Arthur Larson, Miss Velva Berglund, Axel Sandegren and Lester Anderson sang "There's a Land That Is Fairer Than Day," "Fade, Fade Each Earthly Joy," and "Abide With Me."

At the close of the services the remains were escorted to the South Marion cemetery for interment. The pallbearers were: Gust Berglund, John Knuth, Garnet Silvey Rudy Hubner, J.A. Simonson and John Sonksen.
