Deborah Hegland, 55, of Jewell and formerly of Mason City, died Sunday, July 29, 2018 at Mary Greeley Medical Center of a sudden illness. She is survived by her husband, Mitch of Jewell; children, Danielle (Jacob) Fisher, Daisy Hegland, and Darby Hegland, all of Jewell; grandchildren, Beatrix and Simeon Fisher; her sister Cheryl Hansen (Brian) of Ocoee, Florida, and several nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother, Douglas Olson, and by her sister, Kimberly Olson.

Debbie was born in Forest City, Iowa on August 17, 1962 to Lloyd "Whitey" and Alice Olson. She grew up in Mason City. She graduated Mason City High School in 1980 and NIACC in 1982. She married Mitchell Hegland on August 21, 1982 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Mason City. The couple made their home in Jewell. Debbie was an Optometric Assistant and Office Manager at the Ames Eye Clinic before choosing to stay home to raise and homeschool her children. She attended Community Church of Kamrar, started the Booster Club in South Hamilton and volunteered at the school. She loved spending time with her family, especially her daily video chats with her grandchildren.

Debbie’s love of family, quick wit, and determination in the face of hardships will be remembered by those who knew her. A Gathering of Remembrance will be held from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Friday, August 3, 2018 at the Community Church of Kamrar.
