Funeral services for Roy Newman, 87, 1511 First St., will be held Monday at 11 a.m. at the Foster Funeral home with Harvey Hearn, Jr., officiating and with burial in Graceland cemetery.

Mr. Newman died Thursday night at the Southview Care Center where he had resided the past five months.

Graveside flag-folding services will be held by the American Legion Post 191. The family has requested that memorials be given to the American Cancer Society.

Roy Newman, son of George Wesley and Lillie Mae Barrow Newman, was born May 8, 1893, near Hallsville, Mo. He was reared and educated near Centralia, Mo., moving to Wright county, Iowa, in 1915.

He was married to Nellie A. Caquelin who preceded him in death in May, 1936.

He served with the U.S. Army in France during World War I and then returned to Wright county where he engaged in farming until 1928, when the family moved to Webster City. He was employed at the Brown's Greenhouse and later with the WPA.

He married Mamie Beghtel on July 29, 1938 at Bethany, Mo.

Mr. Newman worked as a custodian at Lawn Hill school for 17 years, retiring in 1957.

He is survived by his wife; one daughter, Mrs. Marion (Shirley) Leeper of Kamrar; three sons, Stanley Newman, Fort Dodge, Robert Newman, Webster City and Larry Newman of Silver Springs, Md. Also surviving are 17 grandchildren; 6 great-grandchildren; one brother, Curtis Newman of Centralia, Mo., and one sister, Mabel White, Huntsville, Mo.

He was preceded in death by one son, Roy Wesley Newman, who died during the World War II, both parents and five sisters.

He was a member of the VFW, Webster City, and was a former member of American Legion Post 191 and the World War I Barracks.
