The family will receive friends on Thursday, November 2, from 5:00 to 9:00 p.m. at the St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church.

Carla Mae (Olson) Penning was born on June 11, 1959, to Richard and Elaine Olson in Story City, IA and grew up on a farm near Randall, IA. She died on October 30, 2017 at her home south of Hubbard, IA.

She was baptized into the Christian faith at Riverside Bible Camp while Elim built their new church in Randall. She was confirmed at the Elim Lutheran Church in Randall.

Carla attended Randall Elementary School until 6th grade and then attended and graduated from South Hamilton High School in 1977. She attended Iowa State University and then entered Professional Cosmetology Institute in Ames, IA.

Carla started her career in 1982 at a salon in Story City and opened The Hair Loft on Broad in 1985 and then moved to her own building and changed the name to Salon 603 in June 1991. She continued to work until diagnosed with cancer in the fall of 2016.

On November 2, 1985 she was married to Stanley David Penning at Elim Lutheran Church in Randall, IA and they moved to their current home on the farm south of Hubbard, IA. They were blessed with two children Colton Richard and Candra Marie.

Carla was blessed with a very social personality and loved to laugh. She loved her clients and made many, many friends. During high school she participated in State Championship Softball, as well as, basketball, track, flags, loved music and being in musicals, which carried over for her love to support all those activities as an adult. She loved watching her kids in all their activities and everyone knew when she was in the stands, especially State dance with the Jewell Gems.

She grew up with a large group of cousins, who she truly enjoyed spending time with, which moved her to ensure that her kids and their cousins were very close as well. She loved to sing and sang at many funerals, weddings and baptisms, which also led to singing in the church choir at St. John's Lutheran Church.

Carla lived a Christ-centered life and was a strong witness enjoying Bible studies and furthering her understanding of faith.

Carla also loved the outdoors, camping, boating, making many special memories at Clear Lake, and camping at the Iowa State Fair for many years. She loved painting, decorating and entertaining family and friends for the holidays and gatherings (any excuse would do).

Carla is survived by her loving husband Stan Penning of rural Hubbard, IA; son Colton Penning of rural Hubbard, IA; daughter Candra (Penning) Grev and husband, Kaleb of Ankeny, IA; mother Elaine Olson of rural Story City, IA; brothers Rodney (Terri) Olson of rural Jewell, IA and Todd (Charlene) Olson of Story City, IA; sisters Shelly (Brian) Wilson of rural Spencer, IA and Beulah (Eric) Meints of Granger, IA; 11 nieces and nephews on the Olson side; 13 nieces and nephews on the Penning side; along with many other relatives and friends.

Preceding her in death are her father Richard Olson, grandparents Leo and Beulah Olson and Cornett Olson.

Carla will be remembered for her kindness, the love of her family and friends, and always providing humor. We give thanks to the Lord for blessing us all with Carla.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Padded Chair Fund at St. John's Lutheran Church, PO Box 267, Hubbard, IA.
