Gene enlisted in the US Air Force in the summer of 1951, and on December 30th of that year married Rosa Lee Caruth. To this union two children were born: Rick and Jeannie.

Gene was aircraft mechanic on B-47 planes during his four years of service at the Lockbourne Air Force Base in Columbus, Ohio. In 1955 the couple moved back to the Ellsworth community where Gene was a member of the American Legion, an assistant fire chief and a board member of the local co-op. In 1962 the family moved to a farm outside of Randall where for 35 years Gene raised turkeys and farmed. Gene loved being a farmer. Gene was a member of the Elim Lutheran Church. In 1991 Gene and Rosa moved to Story City. Gene was employed by McFarland Clinic as a patient attendant, a position he enjoyed very much for eleven years. A recent highlight of Gene's life was the thrill of participating in the Story County Honor Flight to Washington DC in October. This was followed by Gene and Rosa's 62 years of celebrating marriage in December.

Gene is survived by his wife Rosa of Story City; one son, Rick (Jennifer) Ballantine of Ames; one daughter, Jeannie (Pete) Hill of Story City; six grandchildren, Jason (Brittany) Hill, Westin (Katelyn) Barnes, Bret Ballantine, Shayla Barnes, Alex Hill and Brittany Ballantine; and two sisters, Doris Caruth of Stratford and Virginia Sorenson of Silver Springs, Nevada. He is preceded in death by his parents.

The family expresses their gratitude to the physicians, nurses and staff of Bliss Cancer Center and Israel Hospice House for their loving and patient care and support. The family requests memorial contributions be made to Elim Lutheran Church, Randall Iowa, Bliss Cancer Center and Israel Hospice House both in Ames.
