Mrs. Whalen, 85, Dies in Stanhope

Mrs. Alice Whalen, 85, longtime Stanhope resident, died at 2:30 a.m. today at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Roy Davis, in Stanhope. Five years ago she suffered a fractured hip, and since that time had been in failing health.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Christian church in Stanhope, preceded by a brief service at 1:30 at the Davis home. The Rev. C.F. Schmidt and the Rev. T.W. Walton will officiate with burial in the Lawn Hill cemetery near Stanhope. Foster's funeral home has charge of services.

Flora Alice Goodman, daughter of Jacob and Miranda Goodman, was born Nov. 18, 1867 on a farm in Boone county near Mackey, Iowa. She received her elementary schooling in the schools near Mackey, later attending teachers' college. She taught school in Washington State and later in the rural schools near Mackey.

She was united in marriage March 9, 1892 to John Whalen. Mr. and Mrs. Whalen started housekeeping on a farm three miles southeast of Stanhope, residing there until 1922 when they retired and moved into Stanhope, their home since.

She was preceded in death by her husband, who died in 1933; her parents, three sisters and one brother. She is survived by one son, Edgar Whalen, and one daughter, Mrs. Roy (Hazel) Davis, both of Stanhope. Also surviving are two grandchildren, Mrs. Wayne (Roberta) Teig and Ralph Whalen of Stanhope; three grandchildren; one sister, Mrs. L.G. Marks of Des Moines, and two brothers, Edgar Goodman of Madrid and Willard Goodman of Phillip, S.D.

Mrs. Whalen was baptized in the Christian faith and was a member of the Christian church at Stanhope. When her health permitted, she was very active in church work, being a longtime member of the Ladies aid and a Sunday school teacher for many years. She was also an active member of the missionary society.
